Discover the results of Nio Teasā€™ 4 step tea tasting method

In order to provide our customers with the most accurate and comprehensive assessment of the Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea, we conducted a thorough evaluation of both its texture and flavor. This involved a detailed examination of several key factors, including its level of dryness, sweetness, minerality, and acidity. We also made sure to carefully analyze the tea's mouthfeel, taking note of its thickness and richness to ensure a consistent and satisfying drinking experience. Finally, we paid close attention to the tea's vegetal flavor profile, which is a hallmark characteristic of all high-quality matcha varieties. By carefully considering all of these factors, we are confident that our assessment provides an accurate representation of this exceptional tea's unique and nuanced flavor profile.

Step 1 - Observing the Appearance

When it comes to appearance, the Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea is distinguished by its strikingly deep olive green color, which is a testament to the tea's high quality and exceptional flavor profile. To achieve this rich color, the tea undergoes a careful cultivation and processing process, resulting in a powder that is as visually stunning as it is delicious. Furthermore, the tea is sifted to perfection to ensure that each serving is consistent and evenly textured, allowing for a smooth and easy drinking experience that is sure to leave you feeling satisfied and refreshed.

Step 2 - Assessing the Aroma

The aroma of the ceremonial matcha powder is salty and savory with a hint of this vegetal flavor

Step 3 - Tasting the Tea

The Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea starts off strong with a rich smooth flavor and then the vegetal taste soon kicks in. This tea is strong on these vegetal, slightly seaweedy taste notes with a strong umami flavor but it is well balanced by the rich and creamy mouthfeel. There is a tiny hint of dryness in the finish.

Step 4 - Evaluating the sensation on the palate

The tasting structure of the Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea is very smooth and well rounded, but there are some aspects that are able to shine through like the bold savory flavor, light vegetal and citrusy flavors as well as a tiny hint of dryness in the finish.

100% Organically grown and Ethically Sourced

At Nio, we prefer to work in close partnership with tea farmers who cultivate their plants without the use of pesticides or chemicals. We believe that by using these methods, farmers arenā€™t only able to improve the taste of the tea, but also promote the overall health and sustainability of the tea fields.

In our experience, tea farms that avoid pesticides and chemicals can not only support the growth of tea plants, but they can also foster a thriving ecosystem for a diverse range of plants and animals.

Nio Teas Unique Organically grown sourcing process

  • Careful taste testing of each individual tea
  • Communication with the farmers about the production methods and how they make sure they ensure no pesticides are being used on the fields
  • In person farm visits to judge the quality of the tea field and the production facility
  • Making sure that the biodiversity around the tea fields is lively
JAS Japanese Agriculture Standards logo

JAS Certified

The JAS logo that you will find on the Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea and many of our other teas is short for Japanese Agriculture Standards. This label ensures that products are grown without pesticides or chemicals.

At Nio, we prioritize tea fields that are completely free of pesticides or chemicals during our selection process. When working with larger tea farmers, we require them to provide us with the JAS label, which they can acquire through soil sampling and testing.

While partnering with smaller tea farmers who haven't obtained certification yet, we accept the "pesticide-free" label and aim to provide opportunities for small farmers without making the screening process too rigorous. Our goal is to support exceptional tea production while maintaining our commitment to pesticide-free farming.

How to prepare the tea

To prepare the Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea, follow these basic steps for optimal results. While you can simplify this process if you prefer, we recommend following these steps to get the best results from your bowl of matcha.

Necessary teaware

To ensure that you're making the most out of your Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea, it's important to use the right utensils. Here's a closer look at each one:

  • Matcha Bowl: The matcha bowl, or "chawan," should be wide and shallow, allowing you to easily whisk the matcha powder and water into a frothy texture. The ideal matcha bowl is made of ceramic or porcelain to help retain heat.
  • Bamboo Whisk: The bamboo whisk, or "chasen," is a key tool for creating the perfect texture in your matcha. The fine tines of the whisk help to create a smooth and frothy texture, giving the tea its characteristic velvety mouthfeel.
  • Chashaku: The chashaku, or bamboo scoop, is used to measure out the perfect amount of matcha powder for each cup. It's important to use the correct amount of matcha to ensure that you get the full flavor and depth of the tea.
  • Sifter: A small sieve or "furui" is used to sift the matcha powder before whisking it with water. This helps to remove any clumps or impurities, creating a smooth and even texture.

Nakai farm in japan

Location of production and farmer

Information about the farm

The Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea is produced by the Nakai family. Mr. Nakaiā€™s father is one of the people credited with the JAS logo, which is now affixed to the labels of every organic certified tea in Japan. This just shows you the long history the Nakai family has when it comes to producing Japanese green teas without pesticides or chemicals.

Sourced in Kyoto

Japan

The Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea is produced outside of Kyoto, an area that has a long history of tea cultivation. The first tea plants grown in Japan were planted not too far from here in 1192 and the region still is amongst the most famous when it comes to the cultivation of Japanese green tea.

The area is particularly well-known for itā€™s matcha. After tasting hundreds of matcha teas from all over Japan, Kyoto and Uji are the regions best represented. This area has been the hotbed for matcha cultivation for the last 400 years and itā€™s not showing any signs of slowing down!

Cultivar and tea plant variety

The Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea is made from the Okumidori cultivar. Based on customer feedback, this has been the most popular cultivar for matcha at Nio Teas.

  • Okumidori

The Okumidori tea variety is renowned for producing smoother and fuller-bodied teas. It is frequently blended with other teas to mellow out any bitterness, but sometimes it is used on its own. Although it is harder to produce, Okumidori is well worth it when it comes to creating teas like the Washimine Ceremonial Matcha Tea that donā€™t have any bitterness in the finish.
